acupuncture work?
Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine work by re-establishing balance and harmony in the body.
Channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its
surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing
through the body that irrigate and nourish tissues. An obstruction in the
movement of these energy rivers can create pain, disease, and imbalance.
The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points. The
acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions and re-establish the regular
flow of energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific
explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous
system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These
chemicals will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the
release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body’s own
internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance
produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing
abilities, and promotes physical and emotional well-being.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture is
not painful when done correctly. You should feel very relaxed and
peaceful during your treatment. Because acupuncture stimulates endorphins,
it produces a lovely state of relaxation and peacefulness. The needles are
extremely fine and thin, and are usually as thick as a human hair. If you
have concerns or fears, please discuss them with me and I will make a
special effort to assist you.
Are the needles safe?
Absolutely! All
acupuncture needles are disposable, completely sterile, and safe. Your
needles have never been used on anyone before, and will never be used again
after your treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends completely
upon your particular problem and its duration and severity. For complex or
long-standing conditions, one or two treatments per week for a month may be
recommended. For acute problems, usually fewer visits are required. For
health maintenance, four sessions per year may be all that is necessary.
